CORTINA D'AMPEZZO, Italy — Ilka Stuhec claimed the first super-G of her career at Cortina d'Ampezzo on Sunday as World Cup leader Lara Gut crashed out and US ski queen Lindsey Vonn trailed in out of the top 10.
The 26-year-old Slovenian finished 0.31 seconds ahead of Italian Sofia Goggia with Austria's Anna Veith third at 0.70sec.
Vonn arrived in Italy on the back of her 77th World Cup win in the downhill at Garmisch-Partenkirchen last week in only her second race since breaking her right arm in November and fracturing her left knee last February.
But after crashing in Saturday's downhill the American finished just 12th fastest on Sunday.
Stuhec made the difference on the bottom of the course leaving her rivals in her wake in a breakthrough season which has given her five wins and a third place finish.
Veith, meanwhile, has regained the form which saw her win the overall World Cup titles in 2014 and 2015 under her maiden name Fenniger before being sidelined with a serious injury.
Defending overall World Cup champion Gut won the weekend's downhill, and leads the super-G standings after three wins this season, but came unstuck on Sunday.
She skied off the piste after crashing into a gate, managing to finish the run but visibly suffering with a sore arm. "I am almost OK," the Swiss tweeted afterwards.
US title rival Mikaela Shiffrin finished fourth despite not being a super-G specialist to boost her overall World Cup lead on Gut to 80 points with Goggia third after her fifth runner-up spot this season. — AFP
