JEDDAH — Abiding by the rules is the hallmark of a dutiful and responsible citizen, according to the top Indian diplomat in the Kingdom. Indian Ambassador Ahmad Javed emphasized that this quality should be an essential requirement in day-to-day life of every member of the society regardless of whatever profession he or she holds, and that disregarding the rules would end up creating chaos in society.
Ahmad made the remarks while delivering the keynote speech at the Annual Awards Day of International Indian School-Jeddah (IISJ) at the packed Boys’ Section Auditorium on Tuesday evening.
In a highly inspiring speech, Ahmad, the chief guest, urged students to develop this quality as a prerequisite for their overall success in life, saying “I have been abiding by rules not because of having served as a professional police officer for 36 years but because it is a necessary trait of a dutiful and responsible citizen.”
He also highlighted the role of teachers and parents in molding successful, dutiful and responsible citizens in any profession that they chose by providing them the best ever education and support.
“The role of a teacher is not only teaching the subject but also becoming a role model with imparting values so as to ensure that the child is not only good in studies but also is mature to become a dutiful and responsible citizen. The school is more important for the children in imbibing ethics and values at the most impressionable and crucial period of their life as they spend more hours in school,” he said.
The colorful ceremony was held in the presence of Guest of Honor Consul General of India Mohammed Noor Rahman Sheikh, Deputy Consul General and School Observer Mohammed Shahid Alam, IISJ Managing Committee Chairman Mohammed Asif Daudi, School Principal Syed Masood Ahmed, managing committee members, prominent figures from the Indian community, IISJ staff, parents and students.
The dignitaries congratulated the IISJ toppers and winners, as well as their teachers and parents for their immense contributions in achieving outstanding performance in Central Board of Secondary Education examinations in classes 12 and 10.
Congratulating both the teaching and non-teaching staff for the remarkable achievement, Javed noted that there are three main stakeholders in the school activities and achievements — students, staff and parents, and each has to play their own designated roles. “But if any one of these stakeholders fail to perform their role properly, the desired goals of high quality of education and high standard of expertise may not be achieved in the area that students chose for themselves,” he pointed out.
Addressing parents, the ambassador said that they should neither let their children’s talent and aptitude go unrecognized nor try to suppress their aptitude and dreams. “Many parents want to subdue the aptitude and talent of the children to cater to their interests. A child’s talent and aptitude should not be subdued and ignored at all,” he said ,while emphasizing that good parents and schools should be proactive enough to identify and nurture the talent of the children and enable them to grab the vast and exciting opportunities available around them as “the opportunities are much more today unlike our school days in which we never heard of them.”
Javed also advised the students to give equal importance to means as well as the end. “Ends are more important for all of us but we have to realize the fact that not only ends but also means to achieve the end is also equally important,” he reminded all in the audience of this crucial action.
In his highly motivating speech, Sheikh highlighted the significance of excelling in any area chosen by students for their future studies. “Instead of becoming bookworms, you have to try to score success in real life through developing an impressive personality, develop good thought process, and aim to excel in the area of field chosen from among the vast opportunities laid open in front of you. Hard work, diligence, perseverance, commitment, and determination will bring you success.”
The consul general advised students to work hard to excel in any field. “Even those who scored less marks in exam, they can perform well in future career courses by sheer dint of hard work and pursuing their interests —- be it academics, sports or just arts,” he said while citing the example of his own student life.
In his impressive speech, Daudi underscored that success without value is meaningless. “Hence, you have to nurture good values in yourself by respecting your parents, teachers, and elders and at the same time leaving the impression among all that we belong to India, a great nation that values value.” Daudi, a well-known academic, reminded students that life is quite challenging and that they have to be strong enough to accept all these challenges in life. “You have to maintain the success that you achieved today and try to score better in future life.”
Earlier, Principal Ahmed welcomed the gathering and presented the annual report. He described the excellent track record of the school in both the curricular and co-curricular fields. Ahmed briefed on the remarkable achievements and giant leaps that have been made over the 47 years to realize the vision of becoming a center of excellence that develops and nurtures the potential of each student to the fullest in all walks of life.
He also explained about the time-bound three-year mission to further enhance quality of education and students’ talent and skills as well as to improve the efficiency of teaching staff. “The school has been making outstanding performance in co-curricular activities too,” he said, while citing the achievements in debate, quiz, elocution, football, cricket, basketball, badminton, table tennis, and many other areas.
Ambassador Javed presented awards to first three school toppers of CBSE 12 examination. They are Amina Ashraf, Afreen Hooriya Naceruddin and Amal Shameer. Streamwise toppers and subject toppers from among boys and girls in classes 12 and 11 were also presented with awards. Students who won all A1 grade in all subjects from classes 6 to 10 were also honored. Mujtaba, topper in SAT exam with scoring 2400 out of 2400, was presented with an award.
Headmaster for Boys Section Noufal Palakkoth, Headmistress for Girls Section Rita Sharma and five teachers who have completed 25 years of service were also honored. The teachers are Mohammed Haneefa V.V.K, Mohammed Mairaj Afzal, Shaheen Fatima, Nargis Jahan Mahdi and Zehra Jabeen.
The function commenced with the recitation of a few verses from the Holy Qur’an and its translation by Hamza Kalid. Saplings were presented to the chief guest and the other dignitaries on the dais. A melodious welcome song, by students from six to eight block and choreographed by Bindu Udayan, was another attraction of the event. Vice Principal of Boys’ Section Dr. Najeeb Qais Ammar proposed a vote of thanks.
The event was anchored by Maria Das Arackal Thomas and Bushra Zaidi.
