MUMBAI - Bollywood actress Rani Mukherjee's father Ram Mukherjee died in Mumbai around 5 a.m. on Sunday, reports news agency IANS. He was 84 and had been in ill health for some time.

"He was admitted to the Breach Candy Hospital from Oct. 13 and his treatment was going on. Unfortunately, his body was not responding to the treatment that well this time. Last night, his blood pressure suddenly dropped around 5 a.m. He is no more, everything is finished," Ram Mukherjee's widow Krishna said over the phone.

He was the co-founder of Filmalaya Studios and was best-known for directing films like "Hum Hindustani" and "Leader", starring Dilip Kumar and Vyjayanthimala. Mukherjee had also directed and produced Rani's debut Bengali film "Biyer Phool" in 1996.

Mukherjee's cremation was held on Sunday afternoon at the Pawan Hans Crematorium in Vile Parle West. Rani, along with husband Aditya Chopra, was present at the last rites. Actors Aamir Khan, Anil Kapoor and Ranveer Singh also came to pay their last respects.- Agencies
