JEDDAH — The General Secretariat of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) expressed its strong condemnation of the attack on the Embassy of Bahrain in the Iraqi capital Baghdad and the subsequent sabotage acts.

It called on the Iraqi government to exert all efforts to protect diplomatic missions, in accordance with international law and the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, as well as to prosecute the perpetrators of the attack and bring them to justice.

The Iraqi Foreign Ministry condemned the attack on the Bahraini Embassy in Baghdad Thursday evening.

Dozens of people stormed the embassy compound in protest against a conference held in the Gulf nation.

An Iraqi security official, who spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations, said the protesters stayed in the garden and did not storm the offices inside the compound in Bagdad’s western neighborhood of Mansour. He said security forces opened fire in the air to disperse the protesters.

The ministry stressed in a press statement its commitment to the sanctity of diplomatic missions, and not to endanger its security, describing the security of embassies in red line, explaining that the Iraqi security authorities have taken all measures, and make utmost efforts in the prosecution of the perpetrators and instigators of these acts, stressing that it will not allow such actions on the distinguished relations between the two countries. — SG/SPA
