MUMBAI — On Wednesday, the great Bollywood actor Irrfan Khan died in the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani hospital here after he was rushed there on the April 28. He was kept in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) due to a severe colon infection.

Irrfan Khan, 53, is survived by his wife Sutapa Sikdar and two sons Babil Khan and Ayan Khan.

The shocking news came just 3 days after the actor’s mother, Saeda Begum, took her last breath on Saturday in her hometown Jaipur. However, due to the lockdown, the actor was not able to physically attend the last rites of his mother and reportedly had to pay his last respect via video call.

On Wednesday morning, the doctors treating Irrfan put him on the ventilator and the family was asked to keep their hopes up.

In March 2018, the actor who even worked on various Hollywood movie including The Life Of Pie, was diagnosed with neuroendocrine tumor and for the treatment left to London and only returned almost a year later in February 2019.

When he returned, he filed for Angrezi Medium and a couple of months later went back to London to continue with his treatment and finally returned to India in September last year after a successful recovery from the surgery.

Irrfan Khan was last seen in the comedy drama movie Angrezi Medium directed by Homi Adajania, which was also the last Bollywood movie to hit the cinema halls before the nationwide lockdown shut all the cinema halls in the country.

Irrfan Khan was awarded the Padma Shri — India's fourth highest civilian honor — in 2011 for his contributions to the Indian film industry.

As the news surfaced, Twitter grieved and mourned the demise of the veteran Bollywood actor.

Former Piku co-star Amitabh Bachchan wrote, “this is a most disturbing and sad news, an incredible talent .. a gracious colleague .. a prolific contributor to the World of Cinema .. left us too soon .. creating a huge vacuum ..

Prayers and duas.”

Akshay Kumar wrote, “Such terrible news...saddened to hear about the demise of ‪#IrrfanKhan, one of the finest actors of our time. May God give strength to his family in this difficult time.”

John Abraham wrote, “You will be missed ... RIP #IrrfanKhan.”

Riteish Deshmukh wrote, “Our loss, heaven’s gain. ‪#IrrfanKhan ‪#RIP Thank you for all the magic you weaved on celluloid. Condolences to the family and loved ones.” — Agencies
