Thursday marks the first day of Islamic new year

RIYADH — Saudi Arabia’s Supreme Court has announced that Thursday, Aug. 20, is the first day of Muharram, the first month of the new Hijri year of 1442.

The court said in a statement that the crescent of the month of Muharram 1442 was sighted on Wednesday evening, Dhul Hijjah 29, corresponding to Aug. 19, according to the Umm Al-Qura calendar, the Saudi Press Agency reported. — SG
