LONDON — More than 54.4 million (54,374,319) people have been reported to be infected by the novel coronavirus globally and 1,318,954 have died, according to global data.
The United States topped the global death toll, followed by India, Brazil, France, Russia, Spain, the United Kingdom, Argentina, Colombia, Italy and Mexico.
The COVID-19 is affecting 217 countries and territories around the world and 2 international conveyances.
Meanwhile, the number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Germany increased by 16,947 to 790,503, data from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) for infectious diseases showed on Sunday. The reported death toll rose by 107 to 12,485.
In Moscow, the Russian authorities announced on Sunday 352 deaths from the coronavirus pandemic, while registering 22,572 new positive cases in the past 24 hours. The coronavirus operations center said that the total fatalities increased to 33,186 while total infection cases rose to 1,925,825. People who recovered during he past 24 hours reached 14,456 bringing the total recoveries to 1,439,985.
Britain too reported 26,860 new cases of coronavirus on Saturday, down from 27,301 on Friday and the lowest number since Wednesday, according to Reuters. The daily number of new deaths reported within 28 days of a positive test rose to 462 from 376 on Friday, taking the cumulative total to 51,766.
In Paris, the number of confirmed new COVID-19 cases and deaths in France rose sharply in the last 24 hours, Reuters cited French Health Ministry data as publishing on Saturday.
France registered 32,095 new COVID-19 cases over the previous 24 hours to reach a total of 1,954,599. Deaths in hospitals in France from COVID-19 rose by 359 over the previous 24 hours to reach a total of 44,246 so far.
In Brussels, total coronavirus cases in Belgium on Sunday reached to 531,280 with 6,268 new infections, health authorities said. Some 197 deaths from COVID-19 were reported in the last 24 hours, raising the total to 14,303.
In New Delhi, Indian health authorities announced on Sunday that 447 people died due tot COVID-19 while 41,100 new cases were reported from across the country in a span of 24 hours.
The Indian Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said that fatalities due to coronavirus climbed to 129,635 while the total number of positive cases mounted to 8,814,579.
The Health Ministry said that 8,205.728 people recovered from the pandemic as it spread to 25 Indian states. Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Kerala are the worst hit Indian states.
In Cairo, the Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population said 228 more infections with eh novel coronavirus and 13 fatalities have been confirmed over the past 24 hours.
The figures took the country’s tally to 110,547 infections and 6,442 deaths, the ministry said. As many as 99 patients have been discharged from hospitals, bringing the overall recoveries to 100,946.
Romania: Ten dead in COVID-19 hospital blaze
Romanian officials said a fire at a hospital treating COVID-19 patients has killed 10 people and critically injured seven others.
The blaze spread through the intensive care ward designated for people with COVID-19 patients at the public hospital in the northern city of Piatra Neamt, said Irina Popa, the spokeswoman for the local Emergency Situations Inspectorate.
Popa said all of the people who died or were injured in Saturday's fire except one were hospital patients. Romanian Health Minister Nelu Tataru told local media the fire was “most likely triggered by a short circuit.” — Agencies
