JEDDAH — Inas Bint Ahmed Al-Shahwan took oath early Thursday as Saudi Arabia’s new ambassador to Sweden before Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman in the presence of Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Salman during a virtual ceremony along with a number of newly appointed ambassadors.
Al-Shahwan becomes the third Saudi woman to be appointed as an ambassador. She joins the august company of Princess Reema Bint Bandar Bin Sultan and Amal Bint Yahya Al-Moallimi.
Amal Bint Yahya was appointed as ambassador of Saudi Arabia to Norway in October 2020, becoming the second Saudi woman to hold the coveted post after Princess Reema Bint Bandar.
However, Princess Reema was sworn in as Saudi ambassador to the US in April 2019, marking a new dawn for Saudi diplomacy.
These appointments represent the vibrant entry of women to the prestigious position of envoys that were hitherto a monopoly of male diplomats.
