MANILA — A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck Calatagan, Batangas early Sunday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

The state seismologists said the earthquake of tectonic origin hit 21 km west of Calatagan at 5:50 a.m. It also has a depth of 132 km.

The report was confirmed by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) who too said that a 6.1-magnitude earthquake has occurred in the Philippines.

The quake occurred at 21:50 GMT on Saturday, at a depth of about 109 miles (175 kilometers), EMSC said.

Meanwhile, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said that the quake occurred at a depth of 80 miles.

EMSC said that the earthquake struck about 4 miles (7 kilometers) southeast of Nasugbu. According to USGS, the quake hit 0.6 miles northeast of Bungahan. There were no immediate reports of any damages.

Intensity IV- Calatagan, Batangas

Intensity III — Quezon City; Pasay City; Pasig City; Obando, Bulacan; and Tagaytay City, Mendez, Amadeo and Alfonso, Cavite.

Intensity II — Abucay, Bataan; Gapan City, Nueva Ecija; Castillejos, Zambales; Mandaluyong City; Manila; Makati City; and Tanay, Rizal

Damage and aftershocks are expected, the Phivolcs added. However, the agency said that there is no tsunami threat. — Agencies
