BEIJING — The Deputy Chairman of Saudi Arabia's Human Rights Commission (HRC) Dr. Hisham Al-Sheikh stated that the Kingdom is witnessing a great development in the field of protecting and enhancing human rights.

Dr. Al-Sheikh made the remarks during a speech he delivered at the international symposium in China on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, held in Beijing.

He said that Saudi Arabia has witnessed great achievements in the field of human rights under the care of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman and Crown Prince and Prime Minister Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, as well as in accordance with what was included in the Kingdom’s Vision 2030.

What was included in the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 also played a role in these achievements, Dr. Al-Sheikh said.

He indicated that it formed a clear approach that defines public policies, such as the programs, initiatives and goals that it included that are related to human rights, which contributed to Saudi Arabia achieving rapid developments in this field.

Dr. Al-Sheikh said that the major developments that Saudi Arabia is witnessing in the field of human rights also comes from its Islamic values and constitutional principles, which include regulatory and institutional frameworks and address all rights.

The Kingdom is a party to a number of basic international agreements in the field of human rights, he said.

He added that the Saudi HRC is concerned with protecting and strengthening human rights in accordance with international standards in light of the provisions of Islamic Shariah, and it has wide powers that allow it to perform its tasks with complete independence.

Dr. Al-Sheikh pointed out that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is the most important international document issued by the UN to protect human dignity and their equal rights as a basis for freedom, justice and peace in the world.
