Saudi Arabia highlights AI and bioeconomy efforts at Science 20 meeting

— The King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) represented Saudi Arabia at the inaugural meeting of the Science20 (S20) group in Rio de Janeiro, under Brazil's G20 presidency.

This meeting convened science academies from G20 nations and international scientific organizations to discuss pivotal themes like artificial intelligence (AI), bioeconomy, energy transition, health, and social justice, emphasizing science's role in global transformation.

The Saudi delegation highlighted the Kingdom's progress and leadership in the data and AI sector, particularly noting the establishment of a comprehensive legal framework that meets international standards. This framework aims at promoting the responsible development and application of AI technologies to augment human capabilities.

In terms of bioeconomy, the delegation showcased Saudi Arabia's dedication to diversifying its economy and its commitment to sustainability. The Kingdom's ambitious goals in this sector are underscored by significant investments and driven by the National Biotechnology Strategy. This strategy aims at enhancing public health, protecting the environment, and securing food and water, while also creating economic opportunities and localizing promising bio-industries.

A notable initiative, the Saudi Genome Program, was presented as a cornerstone effort in addressing health challenges within the Kingdom. By harnessing the power of big data, the program aims to propel advances in precision medicine, enhance digital health solutions, and reduce the prevalence of hereditary and genetic diseases.

The Saudi delegation also brought attention to the Kingdom's strategic shift toward a diversified energy mix, with substantial investments in renewable and sustainable energy sources to secure a balanced and forward-looking energy future.

Furthermore, the delegation affirmed Saudi Arabia's commitment to social justice, equality, and the creation of inclusive societies where everyone has equal rights and opportunities.
