September 01, 2024

TOKYO — Typhoon Shanshan weakened to a tropical storm on Sunday as it moved near central Japan, causing significant disruption despite losing strength.

Heavy rains impacted the city of Izu, leading to widespread disruptions in the region, local media reported.

Train services remained heavily affected, particularly between Tokyo and the Shin-Osaka region, with Japan Railway halting operations between Mishima and Nagoya throughout the day. The Tokaido line, a vital transportation route, is expected to resume normal operations on Monday.

The severe weather linked to Typhoon Shanshan has resulted in six fatalities and over 100 injuries across southwestern and western Japan over the past five days, leaving a trail of damage from heavy rains and strong winds. — Agencies
