UNIFIL issues level 3 danger sirens amid escalating tensions in southern Lebanon

October 20, 2024

BEIRUT — Sirens signaling a level 3 danger, indicating a severe risk, were activated on Sunday at the UN peacekeeping mission (UNIFIL) centers in the town of Maarakeh, located in the Tyre district of southern Lebanon.

According to Lebanon's National News Agency, the warning was issued as tensions in the region remain high, fueled by ongoing clashes and cross-border hostilities between Israeli forces and local groups.

UNIFIL personnel and local residents are on heightened alert as the security situation in southern Lebanon continues to deteriorate.

Since late last month, Israel has launched a significant air campaign in Lebanon, targeting what it claims are Hezbollah positions. This offensive has resulted in the deaths of over 1,500 individuals and displaced more than 1.34 million people. Cross-border warfare between the two sides has persisted since the onset of the Gaza conflict in October. — Agencies
