MOSCOW — The Syrian presidency’s official Facebook and Telegram channels on Sunday published a statement purportedly issued by Bashar al-Assad, dated December 16, addressing the circumstances surrounding his departure from Damascus.

In the statement, Assad denied claims of fleeing the country or considering resignation.

“At no time during the events that have taken place in Syria did I ever consider stepping down or seeking refuge,” the statement read, rejecting speculations of his departure amidst the escalating conflict.

Assad described his movements from Damascus to Latakia, coordinated with Russian forces, as part of ongoing military operations.

He emphasized that his role remained focused on overseeing efforts to combat what he referred to as “the terrorist onslaught.”

The statement also sought to reaffirm Assad’s commitment to Syria, highlighting his presence during pivotal moments of the conflict.
