RIYADH — Cristiano Ronaldo did not travel with Al-Nassr’s squad to Iran for their AFC Champions League Round of 16 first-leg match against Esteghlal on Monday, according to local media reports.
The decision to rest the Portuguese captain was made after consultation between the coaching and medical staff due to muscle fatigue.
Head coach Stefano Pioli aims to have Ronaldo fully fit for the return leg in Riyadh, especially given the heavy fixture schedule he has endured in recent weeks.
In Ronaldo’s absence, Colombian striker Jhon Durán is set to lead Al-Nassr’s attack in Tehran, while Saudi forward Mohammed Maran has also been included in the traveling squad and could serve as an impact substitute.
Meanwhile, Senegalese star Sadio Mané returns to the squad after being rested during the team’s last Saudi Pro League match against Al-Orobah.
