Iran FM slams US strikes as UN Charter violation, warns all options on the table

June 22, 2025

ISTANBUL Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi strongly condemned Sunday’s U.S. airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, calling them a “grave violation of international law” and warning that Tehran may consider withdrawing from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

Speaking at a press conference in Istanbul just hours after American B-2 bombers struck Iranian nuclear sites in Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan, Araghchi described the attack as “a major red line crossed” by Washington and accused U.S. President Donald Trump of “betraying diplomacy.”

“The United States has not only deceived Iran but also its own people,” Araghchi said. “This attack is a clear breach of the UN Charter, the NPT, and international law. It proves the U.S. respects nothing but the language of threats and force.”

He confirmed that Iran is calling for an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council to condemn what he termed U.S. aggression and warned that Tehran reserves “all options” to defend its sovereignty, interests, and people.

When asked whether Iran would close the Strait of Hormuz, Araghchi replied: “All options are on the table.”

He added that Iranian armed forces are on high alert and that an assessment of the damage to nuclear sites is ongoing.

The foreign minister also criticized both the U.S. and Israel for “destroying diplomacy,” asserting that Tehran had never abandoned the negotiating table and should not be blamed for the collapse of diplomatic efforts.

In a separate post on X, Araghchi wrote: “The events this morning are horrific and will have lasting repercussions.”

He further urged the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Board of Governors to condemn the attack on Iran’s peaceful nuclear facilities.

The remarks come amid rapidly escalating tensions across the region following the U.S. strike, which President Trump described as “very successful.”

Iran has warned of severe consequences and continues to position itself for a broad range of potential retaliatory measures. — Agencies
