3.0-magnitude earthquake shakes New York City area, no damage reported

August 03, 2025

NEW YORK — A small earthquake rattled the New York metropolitan area Saturday night, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The 3.0-magnitude tremor struck in the New Jersey suburb of Hasbrouck Heights, less than eight miles (13 kilometers) west of Central Park, at a depth of about 6.2 miles (10 kilometers).

One Brooklyn resident described the quake as a brief tremor, “just a slight swaying for a moment.”

Social media lit up with posts from people who felt it, including the official Empire State Building account on X, which reassured: “I AM FINE.”

The quake was weaker than a 4.8-magnitude tremor that hit Tewksbury, New Jersey, in 2024.

While a 3.0 quake is generally too mild to cause damage, such tremors are uncommon in the Northeast.

New York City Emergency Management said there were no immediate reports of major impacts. — Agencies
