At least 25 killed as bus carrying mourners overturns in western Kenya

August 09, 2025

NAIROBI — At least 25 people were killed Friday when a 51-seater bus carrying mourners from a funeral overturned in western Kenya, police said.

Nyanza Regional Traffic Commander Peter Maina told reporters the accident occurred at the Coptic Roundabout, a notorious blackspot in Kisumu County, about 350 kilometers (217 miles) northwest of Nairobi.

The victims were returning from a burial when the driver lost control of the bus, which rolled over in one of the region’s deadliest road crashes this year.

Kenya has recorded a rise in fatal road accidents in 2025, with police attributing the trend to speeding, reckless driving and poorly maintained vehicles.

The tragedy comes just a day after two other deadly incidents in the country’s transport sector: a light aircraft crashed into residential buildings in central Kenya, killing six, while in Naivasha, a train rammed a staff bus belonging to the Kenya Pipeline Company, leaving eight workers dead. — Agencies
