True strength is not measured by how swiftly a nation reaches for its weapons, nor is wisdom defined by patience without end. The stature of a nation lies in knowing when to give peace every opportunity to prevail and when resolve becomes indispensable to its defence. A confident state does not seek war to demonstrate its strength, nor does it allow its commitment to peace to become an invitation to challenge its sovereignty. This is a principle deeply rooted in Saudi Arabia’s history: extending a hand of friendship to those who approach in peace, while remaining unwavering in its duty to protect its land and people.

The recent attacks on Riyadh bring this principle into sharp focus. A city that has become a symbol of transformation and progress, a thriving centre of investment, culture and opportunity, has been subjected to missile attacks for which the Houthi movement has claimed responsibility, threatening civilian facilities and disrupting air travel. Riyadh is far more than a political capital. It is home to millions and a destination for those seeking education, employment and opportunity. When its skies and civilian infrastructure come under threat, the consequences extend far beyond military confrontation; they strike at the security of ordinary people and the continuity of daily life.

Since King Abdulaziz unified the Kingdom, the foundations of the Saudi state have rested upon security, national unity and stability. Across successive reigns, Saudi Arabia has assumed an increasingly significant regional role, contributing to reconciliation efforts, humanitarian relief and assistance to nations devastated by conflict and disaster. Yemen has never been peripheral to this commitment. Its stability has long been central to Saudi Arabia’s regional security priorities, reflecting the deep historical ties between the two countries and the Kingdom’s commitment to Yemen’s sovereignty, unity and stability. The security of Yemen is closely connected to that of the Kingdom, while the suffering of its people carries consequences for the wider region.

For years, Saudi Arabia has supported political and humanitarian initiatives aimed at bringing the Yemeni conflict to an end. Yet the latest escalation has brought the confrontation into a particularly sensitive phase. Recent advances announced by Yemeni government forces, alongside reports of support from the Saudi-led coalition, represent significant developments in efforts to restore security and stability. Sustaining these gains will require progress toward effective governance, functioning institutions and lasting peace for the Yemeni people. After years of devastating conflict, the Yemeni people deserve the restoration of security and ordinary life, with institutions capable of protecting their future and preventing a return to violence.

Perhaps the most disturbing feature of the present escalation is the extension of attacks to airports and civilian infrastructure, placing innocent lives in danger and threatening facilities essential to daily life. Even warfare, in all its brutality, is governed by laws, moral obligations and limits that cannot be disregarded. The deliberate targeting of civilians is prohibited, and indiscriminate attacks cannot be justified by invoking political or military objectives. The endangerment of travellers, children and civilian workers underscores the importance of upholding international humanitarian law and ensuring that civilians remain protected from the consequences of armed conflict.

Saudi Arabia’s preference for diplomatic solutions reflects strategic confidence and a clear understanding of the human and strategic costs of war. Its commitment to peace is matched by an unwavering determination to protect its sovereignty and national security. The Kingdom has consistently demonstrated that diplomacy and defensive readiness are complementary pillars of a responsible national security policy. Its approach combines strategic restraint with the readiness to take the measures necessary to safeguard its territory, population and vital interests. Those who threaten the Kingdom must understand that its pursuit of peace is a deliberate choice rooted in strength, not a limitation on its ability or determination to defend itself.

Against this backdrop, the readiness of the Saudi Armed Forces and air defence units deserves particular recognition. Their responsibilities in safeguarding the Kingdom’s airspace, protecting vital infrastructure and supporting military operations demand constant vigilance and exceptional professionalism. Behind every successful interception stand men entrusted with the nation’s security, performing their duties with discipline and determination under extraordinarily complex circumstances. Such readiness represents more than military capability; it is a foundation of public confidence and a vital safeguard for economic activity and daily life amid regional instability.

From a legal standpoint, the right of a state to protect its sovereignty, population and national assets is fundamental. The United Nations Charter recognises the inherent right of self-defence in the event of an armed attack, subject to the requirements of necessity and proportionality. Saudi Arabia’s right to defend its sovereignty and population is firmly established under international law. Effective deterrence seeks to prevent further aggression, safeguard civilian lives and restore the conditions necessary for regional security and stability. The strength worthy of national pride is strength exercised responsibly, with the protection of the nation and its people at the heart of every decision.

If there is hope to be drawn from this difficult moment, it lies in the possibility that current developments may contribute to a settlement restoring security and effective governance to Yemen, bringing an end to years of suffering and division. Yemen must not remain trapped in an endless cycle of war, nor should its territory, waters and airspace continue to generate threats to regional security. Lasting stability requires more than a temporary cessation of hostilities. It demands institutions capable of protecting the population, safeguarding sovereignty and preventing renewed conflict. Saudi Arabia’s longstanding commitment to Yemen’s stability reflects its recognition that a secure and prosperous Yemen is essential to the security of the Arabian Peninsula and the wider region.

Ultimately, the most dangerous error any party threatening the Kingdom can make is not to underestimate its capabilities, but to misunderstand its wisdom. A nation that chooses restraint does not relinquish its right of defence, and a nation committed to peace does not consent to having that commitment exploited as an opportunity for further aggression. The responsibility of the state lies precisely in reconciling firmness with prudence: protecting its people, preserving its sovereignty and pursuing a peace in which civilian security is never held hostage to armed violence.

Riyadh opens its doors to those who come in peace, but it will not surrender its security to those who threaten it with force. Saudi Arabia knows the value of patience, just as it knows the responsibility of defending its sovereignty and protecting its people. Between the wisdom of peace and the resolve of defence stands a nation that does not seek war, yet will never allow its restraint to become a licence for aggression.
