DAMMAM — Residents in the Eastern Province on Tuesday joined the world community to observe Earth Hour by switching off the lights for an hour from 8.30 p.m. Hotels, cultural, religious and regional organizations, educational institutions as well as people at home expressed their solidarity with the drive to protect the planet.
Keeping with its tradition, Saudi Aramco took the lead in the drive and depicted various aspects of Earth Hour to schoolchildren and families at its various locations. Khalid Al-Mulhim, Saudi Aramco’s general manager for government affairs, said his organization was committed to spreading awareness among the people about water and power conservation in order to protect the planet. “Our efforts continue all year long and we do achieve sustainable results,” he said.
At the ongoing Energy Efficiency Exhibition in Al-Ahsa, schoolchildren and families were given a presentation on Earth Hour, its importance and how such a drive in the long run would protect the planet. Schoolchildren were motivated to participate in several educational games and drawing competitions.
The exhibition also set up several tents to generate specific interests in energy conservation. One of its tents, 1001 Inventions, drew a huge crowd where children tried their inventive skills under the guidance of supervisors and volunteers.
Elsewhere, many businesses adopted innovative measures to observe the one-hour power switch off without causing inconvenience and losses to business. Many hotels in the cities of Dammam and Al-Khobar set up candlelit tables for dinner, creating a perfect ambience. Guests at the hotel doors were welcomed by hotel staff with candles.
