MOVENPICK Hotel Makkah has again been Green Globe certified for 2014. This prestigious international certificate is given for sustainable tourism practices.

As part of its commitment to sustainable tourism and environmental protection, the hotel has recently initiated new internal practices, including activities to reduce the consumption of electricity and water to the minimum, such as switching off computers, lights and AC’s in offices after working hours.

Another initiatives taken, were installing water meters to monitor all areas on a daily basis; replacing halogen 50-watt lights with LED 5-watt energy-saving lights; installing water-saving fittings in guest bathrooms, that saved more than 10% of water consumption; recycling all waste and used materials through specialized companies; and monitoring energy consumption on a daily basis.

The hotel also celebrated the Earth Hour in March, as part of the worldwide grass-roots movement uniting people to protect the planet. Organized by the WWF, Earth Hour engages a massive mainstream community on a broad range of environmental services. The event encouraged everyone to turn off all non-essential lights for one hour once a year as a symbol of their commitment to the planet. — SG
