TOKYO — Ana Ivanovic charged the net repeatedly to overcome US Open finalist Caroline Wozniacki 6-2, 7-6 (7/2) in the final of the WTA Pan Pacific Open here Sunday.

The 26-year-old Serb needed 99 minutes to win the battle of the former world number ones, stretching her head-to-head tally of wins over the second-seeded Dane to five-two.

"It was so hard physically. We had a lot of long rallies but to win the title is amazing," said the third-seeded Ivanovic, who had ousted Germany's top-seed Angelique Kerber in the semifinals.

It was the first Pan Pacific Open title for Ivanovic, who has competed in the Tokyo event for eight straight years.

Ivanovic also beat Wozniacki in their last encounter — by 7-6 (7/5), 6-4 in the semifinals at the WTA event in Monterrey in March. With her win in Tokyo, the Serb earned the top prize money of $196,700 in the $1 million event while $104,900 went to the runner-up.

Goffin wins 2nd career title

Eighth-seeded David Goffin of Belgium served 10 aces and saved all four break points to claim his second career title with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Joao Sousa of Portugal in the Moselle Open final Sunday.

The 23-year-old Goffin is enjoying a strong finish to his season and has now won 34 of his past 36 matches at all levels. After winning his maiden title on clay in Kitzbuehel, Austria, in August, Goffin showed his versatility on the indoor hard court of Metz, where he upset top-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarterfinals.

Goffin extended his winning record against the sixth-seeded Sousa to 2-0 after the Belgian lost only six games when they met in the second round of the US Open.

Pliskova wins Korea Open

Second-seeded Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic defeated fifth-seeded Varvara Lepchenko of the United States, 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-2 on Sunday to win the Korea Open.

The doubles final saw Lara Arruabarrena and Irina-Camelia Begu beat Mona Barthel and Mandy Minella, 6-3, 6-3.

Venus knocked out

Caroline Garcia of France defeated Venus Williams in the first round of the Wuhan Open Sunday while wild card Victoria Azarenka withdrew with an injured right foot and will miss the rest of the season.

Garcia, ranked 30 places below No. 18 Williams, won 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (6) and next faces Agnieszka Radwanska.

Barbora Zahlavova Strycova from the Czech Republic defeated Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia 7-6 (5), 7-6 (2) while Elina Svitolina beat Camila Giorgi 6-2, 6-3.
