Knight fever! Irish village transformed into medieval battlefield
CLAREGALWAY, Ireland — Once the chief fortress of a powerful 15th century family descended from an English knight, the west of Ireland castle of Claregalway went back to its roots on Saturday. The grounds of the fully restored Anglo-Norman era tower house were transformed into a medieval battlefield as hundreds of enthusiastic visitors, many from around the world, re-enacted full contact combat and games from centuries ago. “It’s a nice weekend away and it’s something different,” said Denise Fitzgerald from County Kerry, who as the tavern owner for the weekend prepared food for the competitors by frying vegetables off in lard on a campfire. “For me it’s like getting back to basics. I’ve been trying to do everything properly,” said the theatre worker, who was taking part...

US, Japanese pair win Nobel Medicine Prize for cancer therapy
STOCKHOLM — Two immunologists, James Allison of the US and Tasuku Honjo of Japan, won the 2018 Nobel Medicine Prize for research into how the body’s natural defenses can fight cancer, the jury said on Monday. Unlike more traditional forms of cancer treatment that directly target cancer cells, Allison and Honjo figured out how to help the patient’s own immune system tackle the cancer more quickly. The award-winning discovery led to treatments targeting proteins made by some immune system cells that act as a “brake” on the body’s natural defenses killing cancer cells. The Nobel Assembly said after announcing the prize in Stockholm that the therapy “has now revolutionized cancer treatment and has fundamentally changed the way we view how cancer can be managed”.In 1995, Allison...

Molly, Sweden’s anti-doping dog, gives cheats new problem to chew on
STOCKHOLM — In an ice hockey hall in northern Stockholm, Molly, a four-year-old springer spaniel, busily searches for substances her handlers have planted in locker rooms, shoes and trash cans. The dog is training in a practice session for a role her handlers say is unique to her — sniffing out powders, tablets and liquids used by drug cheats to gain an advantage in sport. Sweden’s Sports Confederation says Molly is the world’s first anti-doping dog, introduced to the job last spring in a bid to broaden the country’s efforts in curtailing the use of performance-enhancing drugs in sport. “She’s a search dog so she’s trained exactly the same as a dog for customs, for example, for narcotics,” Swedish doping control officer Michael Sjoo, also Molly’s handler, said....

Take that sucker! Seal slaps kayaker with octopus
WELLINGTON - Remarkable footage of the moment a New Zealand fur seal slaps a stunned kayaker in the face with an octopus has gone viral. Kyle Mulinder was paddling off the South Island town of Kaikoura over the weekend when he inadvertently became entangled in a battle between a bull seal and the octopus it wanted for lunch. As the seal tried to finish off the unfortunate cephalopod, shaking its jaws vigorously, Mulinder copped an eight-legged slap in the kisser. Mulinder’s companion Taiyo Masuda was testing out a new GoPro camera at the time and captured the entire incident. “One seal swims right next to us, having an octopus in his mouth, pops right up of the surface next to us, then tries to chew up the leg but ended up slapping our face,” Masuda said. “Kyle was in the right...
