White Beluga whale surfaces again in River Thames near London
LONDON - A beluga whale spotted in London’s River Thames surfaced again on Wednesday near the British capital, hundreds of miles from its normal Arctic habitat. The white cetacean, which feeds on fish, squid and crabs, was first spotted on Tuesday and surfaced near Gravesend, Kent on the southern side of the estuary, television footage showed. “We are surprised and a little saddened that it has resurfaced again - we had hoped it had gone out to deeper waters and gone out to where it should be,” said Lucy Babey, head of science and conservation at the ORCA charity. The last sighting of Beluga whales in UK waters was in 2015 when they were spotted off northeastern England near the Northumberland coastline, but they left shortly afterwards. Belugas, which can grow up to 5.5 meters (18...

Saint Laurent walks on water at Paris fashion week
PARIS - Anthony Vaccarello made a splash by having his models walk on water for his Saint Laurent Paris fashion week show Wednesday. The Belgian designer may have divided opinion since he took over from the “Sultan of Skinny” Hedi Slimane at the French label two years ago, but there was no doubting the chutzpah of his spring summer collection. With the Eiffel Tower glittering in the background, Vaccarello sent his models down a flooded open-air runway bordered by neon palm trees.Known for his leggy aesthetic and for never using an inch of fabric more than the most elastic definition of decency requires, the designer insisted on his addition to the power dresser’s wardrobe - black leather hot pants. For those with doubts, they also come in snake skin. There were also splashes of...

I design my life
By Amrina QaisarMaria Iqbal is an Afghan-American artist based in the UAE. The world is her canvas; she creates and transforms everything from chairs to handbags, walls and clothes. Her designs spell out a new language of high-end art pieces that span traditional shapes and forms and cannot be neatly labeled or contained. Materials are only limited by the imagination and include locally sourced leather, custom printed textiles, canvas, plastic, wood, paints, and even the humble pencil.Born in Kabul and raised in Dubai by her traditional Afghan family, Maria grew up with Bollywood films, Japanese anime, larger-than-life icons, and inspirations gleamed from the melting pot of cultures that bring her adopted city to life. She received a Bachelor's degree from the College of William and...

Marwell Zoo
By Tim SaundersBirds have four types of feathers. I never realized this until I visited Marwell Zoo in Hampshire. Wing feathers help the bird fly, tail feathers help to balance and steer, body feathers give protection as well as streamlining while down feathers keep the bird warm. For me the sign of a good day out is walking away with a few interesting, useful facts like this. A nice sunny weekend is an ideal opportunity to visit this attraction, set in 140 acres of Hampshire countryside near Winchester. It’s home to 1,200 animals and there is an emphasis on African wildlife ranging from giraffes and zebras to rhinoceroses, pygmy hippopotamuses and meerkats as well as some colorful birds. Founded by John Knowles, who opened it in 1972, Marwell soon became a leading zoo in Europe to carry...
