Ice cream trucks are a public health risk
Al-JaziraIn the UK, there is a new ice cream flavor that is so spicy you have to sign a legal waiver before buying it. The spicy ice cream is so dangerous that it is named “Breath of the Devil”.This got me thinking that we should do the same and require customers to sign a waiver before buying from local ice cream trucks that are roaming around our neighborhoods. These vehicles are so poorly maintained and unhygienic that the products they sell could harm the health of customers. The ice cream they offer might as well be made with the breath of the devil. Those who operate these trucks trick consumers into thinking the ice cream is attractive and appealing. Although it might seem like the trucks have a nostalgic feel and offer cheap prices like SR1 or SR2 for a cone, in reality the ice...

When Saudi women took the wheel
Makkah dailyA SIMPLE description of June 24 when the royal decree lifting the ban on women driving was put into effect is that it was not just a historic day but was an international day of driving. No country in the world, save Saudi Arabia, had prevented women from driving and then allowed them the right to drive. The day was a proof that the Kingdom has supported reforms within the country as well as in other conservative countries.A revisit to changing the social network is a pure Saudi skill. Here are some of the sarcastic jokes about women driving. I hope I would not anger women or make the men laugh.* A scholar shaved off his beard and mustache because he had sworn he would do so if women were allowed to drive. He documented his action with pictures. A message from a woman driver to...

Women behind great people
Al-Watan newspaperFROM the beginning of human life woman has been an important factor that enriched it with love, peace, beauty and tranquillity. Prophet Adam, the first man on earth, could not live without a woman and God created Eve to support him.According to some historical accounts, when Adam and Eve were sent out of the Paradise, Adam landed in India while Eve found her place in Jeddah. Adam was looking for Eve all over the place and finally found her in Arafat, near Makkah. There is no clear evidence for this narration. However, it explains the important role of woman in a man’s life. She does most of her work in support of man secretly. Her appearance in the fore is often blocked by the great man for whom she worked day and night for his success. This often happens because woman...

Saudization
Al-Madina dailyA CITIZEN tweeted the other day. It said: “Jubail and Dhiba Port has placed a job announcement in an Indian newspaper for the following openings: Fire Squad Leader, Fire Station Director, Firemen, Safety Instructor and Pump Technician. These jobs are offered to non-Saudis although unemployment is high among Saudi youth.”He is right. Saudis are more entitled than any one else to these jobs. The question that poses itself is: Do we really have Saudi youth who are specialized in the required fields and can fill the above positions, which do not strike any interest for most Saudis? But the real question and the more important one is why have Saudi youth not been trained to fill such positions over the past years? For example, jobs at airports should only be offered to...

Heroes in rejection and acceptance
Okaz newspaperWE cannot but wonder at the sudden change of heart. Some scholars took the floor and wrote in the newspapers against women driving. They even issued fatwas (religious edicts) proclaiming woman driving as totally haraam. They are now competing to say that women driving is not only permissible under Islam but are exaggerating to make it not only allowed but almost an Islamic duty. Those who objected to woman driving and stood a solid obstacle against her empowerment have changed their attitudes and are now calling for empowering women in all walks of life. Those of us who do not know the history of these preachers might come to believe that they had always been supporting women and calling for their rights. However, history will not forget what these scholars have been saying. All...

The new Ministry of Culture
Al-Watan newspaperMOST people interested in culture were happy over the establishment of an independent Ministry for Culture, which has been separated from information and youth welfare. We are now looking forward to the new ministry’s tasks and activities.Culture means three things: Firstly, it deals with popular cultural activities such as ancient arts, customs, clothing, proverbs, instruments, folklore and painting. Secondly, it denotes literary works and thirdly it covers intellectual culture or enlightenment. We hope that the ministry’s activities would encompass all these three. Culture in its popular sense has an overwhelming influence on other stakeholders. It has been adequately covered by the annual festivals organized the General Authority for Culture, with the exception of...

Saudi employees
Al-Madina dailyMINISTER of Civil Service Sulaiman Al-Hamdan said recently that his ministry was working day and night on updating the civil service regulations based on the opinions and recommendations of advisers and experts from different government agencies. He also said the regulations would be ready soon for approval while noting that the regulations came in line with the ministry’s strategic objectives and initiatives.I hope the old regulations would be updated. We have heard several officials giving similar promises for years but nothing has been materialized on the ground.Because employees are the most important component of any government machinery, I hope the updated regulations would focus on developing the skills and capabilities of Saudi employees. There are many employees...

Saudi women behind the wheel
Al-Madina newspaperON June 24, the countdown for women driving in Saudi Arabia will stop, heralding a new era in the country’s history. Saudi women have been eagerly waiting for this day after Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman issued a Royal Decree to lift the ban on women driving in the country nine months ago. Women in Saudi Arabia will now sit behind the wheel for the first time. The historic decision comes after calls to remove all obstacles that stood like a mountain in the way of women driving. King Salman deserves special applause for taking this landmark decision ignoring strong resistance put up by opponents. Many non-Saudi women will drive their private cars to reach their work places and run errands. But for many Saudi women who campaigned for lifting the ban,...

We must develop the domestic tourism sector
Al-Riyadh dailyThe expenditure by Saudis on travel and tourism is estimated to be more than SR 80 billion a year – a huge figure equal to the state budget of some countries. It is clear that we must develop and improve the performance of the domestic tourism sector to capitalize on the money that Saudis are spending abroad. However, some indicators have recently shown that the volume of expenditure on domestic tourism has actually decreased. This means that the tourism sector is in need of a stronger infrastructure that can accommodate hotels and entertainment facilities as well as airports and can serve a gigantic number of tourists. The south of the Kingdom enjoys mild weather and mesmerizing scenery in addition to countless tourist attractions. More investments should be made in the...

Why the Saudi Arabia voted against Morocco’s bid to host the 2026 World Cup
Al-Riyadh dailyI was shocked at the reaction of two Moroccan men when two Saudis asked them to take a photo together. The scene took place at Red Square in Moscow before the official opening of the World Cup. The Moroccan men started shouting at the Saudis angrily and saying that the Kingdom should have voted for Morocco to host the 2026 World Cup not against it.Firstly, we need to clarify an important point here: voting is a country’s sovereign right; therefore, it is the Kingdom’s sovereign right. Secondly, nobody can deny the Kingdom’s positive position on Arab and Islamic issues and its endless support for these issues and its constant help to its sisterly countries, especially Morocco. The Kingdom submitted a draft to the UN in 2017 on the situation of human rights violations in...
