Why do some rich people refuse to spend their money?
MakkahI read the news of thieves who attacked an armored money van and stole SR20 million. I was glad to know that they were arrested and jailed. I was thinking the other day about how hard it must have been for the thieves not to spend any of the money so as not to enable the police to locate them.I could not imagine the thought of not being able to spend such a large sum of money. It is a tough thing to do. How could one have all this money all of a sudden and then not spend any of it?However, one of the thieves could not bear this and decided to spend some of the money on luxurious items such as a fancy car. I think having all this money and not being able to do anything with it was more psychologically harmful than not having it.I do not understand why some rich people who are stingy...

Non-Arab expats must learn Arabic
Al-Riyadh dailyI have noticed that several government agencies and businesses make spelling and grammatical mistakes in Arabic and sometimes in expressions. These mistakes prove that whoever writes these words and sentences has weak grammatical knowledge and could be someone who does not speak Arabic as a first language. Most of the people who are involved in service provision come from non-Arab backgrounds and tend to use weird expressions that do not belong to the Arabic language. Unfortunately, some of these weird expressions are also used by Arabs today.Language can be a huge barrier. An expatriate worker can sometimes lose many of his rights because of language. The Arabic language is important because it is the business language and the main tool of communication in the Kingdom.Many...

Budget flights do not mean lower standards of service
Al-JazirahFlyadeal did not let a young boy who is disabled board one of its flights because it did not have facilities for people with special needs. The company apologized to the boy and his father for the mistake and reviewed its policies following mounting public pressure on Twitter. It issued a statement in which it apologized and said that it had corrected the situation. This incident turns the spotlight on the issue of budget airlines and our airport facilities, and whether they are accessible for those who are disabled. In a few months time, the General Authority of Civil Aviation is going to issue travel guidelines for people who have special needs. The guidelines will help disabled people understand their rights and the rules that are applicable in airports. An airline company could...

Don’t be misled by social media celebrities
Al-Watan newspaperA woman recently displayed on social media photos of her face following plastic surgery that she underwent in Turkey. The plastic surgery did not go well and the surgeon who performed it probably did not have a license to practice. The woman went to Turkey after seeing an advert on social media. A social media celebrity had posted a video praising the hospital and the woman believed this. The sad thing is that though the woman explained to the social media celebrity that the doctor was not good, he kept making videos about the hospital. She finally decided to post the photos of her face to warn people. This woman is not the first victim of social media celebrities who operate without any monitoring from the pertinent authorities. We see these people promoting cheap and...

Abuse of women drivers
Al-Jazirah newspaperA LOCAL newspaper published a report about the conditions at one of the schools in the Eastern Province that teach women how to drive. The report said 13,000 women joined the school to learn driving but only 67 of them were able to obtain their licenses. The report insinuates that as many as 12,933 women have failed to obtain driving licenses and that they have not been able to pass the test.A careful reading of the report will reveal that the failure of the women trainees to obtain licenses was not because of any fault on their part but more or less the result of the conditions at the school.I thought the sarcasm against women driving was confined to social media but judging by the report, it is obvious that it had regretfully reached the conventional media too, which...

Saudi Arabia's CERD membership
Okaz newspaperTHE Ministry of Labor and Social Development announced recently that its candidate Dr. Tamader Bint Yousuf Al-Rammah, the deputy minister, has been appointed as a member of the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) in the United Nations. This is not ordinary news. The move is important considering many factors.Foreign organizations have highlighted the issue of women rights in the Kingdom, not because of their love for Saudi women nor to protect their rights or prevent discrimination against them but to tarnish the image of Saudi Arabia. The international human rights organizations have been campaigning against the Kingdom for long to create an impression that Saudi women were not receiving any rights and face a variety of discrimination. We know that the...

Get ready for the changes
Okaz newspaperLIFE is a series of natural and spontaneous changes, according to a famous quote. Nothing remains stable in our life. We have noticed that many professions have disappeared in this age as a result of technological advancement and new jobs have come to the fore.We have seen the style of some professions changed completely. Modern technology has contributed to discarding some professions, reducing expenditures, creating new means of production and improving the quality of work and products.Saudi Arabia has won international awards for developing e-government systems that have cancelled the job of a muaqib (liaison officer) who used to visit government departments to complete various procedures and follow up applications of individuals and companies.Technological progress had...

Fahd Bin Jleid
Dream of 20 million Saudis
Al-Jazirah newspaperNO need to fear about a country whose leader understands the needs, ambitions and challenges of its people. Naturally the people would show the same spirit and enthusiasm to achieve their dreams, objectives and vision with confidence and determination. This is the distinction of Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Salman, deputy premier and minister of defense, as a leader. He represents the country’s youth who account for more than 70 percent of the Saudi population. The crown prince has taken it as a challenge. There is an unprecedented harmony between the Saudi leadership and its people and this is one of God’s greatest blessings. It also represents one of the Kingdom’s strong points. From the very beginning, Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Salman has expressed his confidence in...

Jokes on women driving
Al-Riyadh newspaperI PERSONALLY like sarcastic criticism as a reader and not as a writer, and often enjoy satirical presentations in art forms and in writings. However, I strongly believe that such criticisms should be made to send home useful thoughts and ideas and should not exceed the limit, reaching the stage of personal attack.Sarcastic criticism should have the characteristic of lightness in terms of meaning and time and should not last long to frame a particular case or community.I think the most important issue these days is the preparation for women’s driving on the Kingdom’s roads for the first time in its history. The move comes after Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman lifted the ban on women driving. Relevant authorities have been making necessary arrangements...
