What should we do about domestic abuse?
Al-Jazirah newspaperPeople were recently outraged about the case of an Abha woman who was a victim of domestic violence. Twitter highlighted the incident, as there was a 10-second clip of the woman calling for help as her husband attacked her. Members of the public were split between those who said the clip was real and others who said it was fake. This forces us to rethink the concept of violence against women. Society, as many of us realize, is changing fast. Women have changed because of education and development. They are now able, more than before, to express their opinions in a way that many men, especially those who are still stuck in the past, may disagree with. Such men often resort to violence.Does anyone have the right to interfere in such cases? The name of the woman in Abha and...

Why my driver insisted on buying me a cup of tea?
Al-Madina newspaperMY Bangladeshi driver is an expert in avoiding major streets which are hit by overcrowdedness like the arteries getting strokes due to the high cholesterol. His method of avoiding congested roads is a well-known theory in traffic engineering. It is changing the route between two crowded points in the side lanes which have less but zigzag traffic. My driver does not use any electronic application or a GPS but uses his thorough knowledge of the roads. He moves from a crowded main street into a less crowded side lane to reach his destination very quickly. The other cars which were moving beside him on major streets would still be laboring to get out of these streets while he has already arrived at his destination. One day, I was sitting with him in the car enjoying his unique...

Security of social networking sites
Al-Watan newspaperSEVERAL recent reports have highlighted the Facebook scandal that revealed the selling of secret information of its more than 50 million users to the London-based Cambridge Analytica company, which conducted a psychological analysis of Facebook users. The company wanted to make use of that information improperly for other purposes, breaching the privacy of Facebook users.Following the scandal, Facebook’s founder and chairman, Mark Zuckerberg, came out on his page on the social media giant expressing sincere apology for the leakage of information and vowed that a series of measures would be taken to ensure privacy of Facebook users and strengthen their confidence in the global networking site.“We have a responsibility to protect your data and if we can’t then we...

Saudi opera house
Al-Watan newspaperI BELIEVE the Saudi opera building in the capital city would soon outshine Riyadh Towers and Jeddah Fountain as the major tourist attraction in the Kingdom because of its countless cultural, social and economic benefits. It will bring about a qualitative change in our mindset after extremist forces deprived us of art and culture for a long period and prohibited us from things that would contribute to softening our hearts and minds, cleansing our souls and connecting human beings with one another.I was very happy along with many other citizens when Saudi Arabia signed an agreement with the Paris Opera House a few days ago to help the Kingdom establish a national orchestra and opera house. I cannot explain my feelings thinking about such a wonderful cultural edifice, which...

Scabies at Makkah schools
Makkah newspaperROTANA channel recently hosted me, along with a number of prominent personalities, on its “Ya Hala” talk show to discuss the issue of “The spread of scabies in Makkah schools.” During the program I was surprised to hear the statement by the Education Ministry spokesman Mubarak Al-Osaimi denying the fact that Makkah school classrooms are overcrowded. He made that statement to downplay the issue. Of course, he was talking from his office in Riyadh and did not know the reality in Makkah. Al-Osaimi should have visited one of the schools in the holy city to have a first-hand knowledge of the situation. I also wish the Education Minister, who recently visited a model school in Makkah (after it was disinfected prior to his visit), had inspected the condition of schools in...

What is happening in the girl schools?
OkazWHAT the ministry of education is doing concerning its latest drive to contain the banned extremist groups, foremost of which is the Muslim Brotherhood, kicking them out of the classrooms and expelling them from the entire process of education is a move to be appreciated. It is a positive activity to translate the speech of Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Salman about the perilous nature of the politicized groups on education and the necessity to distance these schools from these groups, which have controlled them for more than 40 years, into action. The ministry has, however, focused on the boy schools without turning to the dark side that is away from the spotlight, which are the girls’ schools. Some of the female leaders of the girls’ schools are still living in the old times, doing the...

Are we capable of manufacturing our own weapons?
OkazThe Armed Forces Exhibition (AFED) was held last month in Riyadh to support the local manufacturing of weapons under the theme “Our Industry is Our Strength,” a reflection of the support for domestic manufacturers and the desire to relocate complementary industries in the Kingdom. The Islamic Military Counter Terrorism Coalition (IMCTC), numerous ministries and other states also participated in the exhibition. There was also the notable presence of global companies who are contractually linked to the Ministry of Defense. Many people are unaware that this event took place and that this was its fourth session. One can speculate that the reason may be the lack of media coverage despite the importance of the exhibition or because it was not the sort of event that people would expect the...

Book exhibitions promote cultural exchange
Al-Madinah newspaperBook exhibitions are global events that almost every country and city organizes every year. They help readers, publishers and intellectuals connect with each other. They also act as vehicles to inform people of new publications and provide them with a chance to exchange ideas. They allow authors, publishers and cultural institutions to participate. They are important cultural events and educational, literary, academic and media activities that interest people are held on their sidelines.Despite the widespread use of technology and the Internet, in addition to the development of social media, book exhibitions gather people interested in books in one place, something that helps reduce costs, allows publishers and readers to meet each other and provides forums for...

Don’t use dangerous wild animals in entertainment shows
Alhayat

newspaperThere has been an increase in incidents involving wild animals in entertainment shows attacking members of the audience. I do not believe in using wild animals in such shows because these animals are still wild even if they have been trained and raised in a peaceful environment. They can suddenly turn on their handlers or audience members as they are dangerous animals and it is their nature to kill. Before the General Entertainment Authority (GEA) allows more of these shows to take place in the Kingdom, it is worth remembering the victims of these shows. The most recent attack happened in Jeddah and involved a lion attacking a child. The Deputy Governor of Makkah region ordered that the show be stopped, investigated and those responsible be punished.Personally, I see...

Why do some people hate music?
Al-Riyadh newspaperMusic is part of people’s life everywhere. If someone comes along and says that music can be fatal to one’s heart, then this person knows nothing about music or what he is talking about. These are extremist thoughts. Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman and Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Salman have been exerting great efforts to put the country on the right path again and ensure that it remains there.I do not really understand why some people hate music. Frankly speaking, I feel pity for them because they have missed out on enjoying the beauty of music. I believe they are victims of the Awakening Movement and must have been influenced by it. At the time, religious activists viewed everything as haraam or impermissible.I also feel sorry for those who view music...
