Reforming our education system
Al-Jazirah dailyThe Department of School Affairs at the Ministry of Education is responsible for merging and closing schools. Many schools do not have the minimum number of students but still operate. Several newspapers have recently carried news stories about these schools. The reason these schools have few students is because of their location and Saudi demographics. The population in most Saudi towns is small and as a result of this the number of students in schools located in towns is not very large. The government builds schools in towns so that children living in remote areas have access to education and do not have to travel long distances.I suggest that the Ministry of Education should think outside the box and stop dividing the Kingdom’s education into the three stages of...

The danger of information overload
Al-Riyadh newspaperIn the past, humanity was sunk, for centuries, into a form of ignorance that was scandalous and where illiteracy was rampant. However, I am a bit embarrassed to say that the abundance of information these days is turning into a constant issue of aggravation. The amount of information at our disposal is increasing; by 2025, web information will increase 30 times. Because of this, professionals, such as engineers or doctors, need to read thousands of books. Hundreds of specialist books and millions of websites need to be updated with the latest discoveries and inventions.Of course, there are professionals who know how to get the information they need, and search engines are good at selecting information. But the abundance of information causes many professionals to lag...

Our suffocated cities finally breathe
Okaz newspaperA FEWS days back, I decided to go for a picnic along the new Jeddah Corniche. Truly speaking, what I have seen has surpassed all my expectations. The Corniche has become a beautiful waterfront that suits the reputation of Jeddah, which is the gateway to our country. It is the city that receives most of the visitors to the country including several millions of Haj and Umrah pilgrims every year.Sometime back I also praised the Jazan waterfront.I have no doubt many beautiful waterfronts have become attractive picnic spots for the Kingdom’s population. Sadly enough, I have not visited all these waterfronts but I have no doubt that all of them are beautiful.Beautification projects in parks and green areas in our towns and cities are nothing new but it seems that there are new...

Where was the municipality until now?
Okaz newspaperTHE Shawqiyyah branch municipality in Makkah has demolished 35 buildings established on land owned by the Presidency of the Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques. It also razed building foundations and random water tanks whose owners did not have legal deeds to construct them on those plots. The municipality said it did what it was supposed to do within its duty not to allow random and underdeveloped districts tarnish the image of the city.It added that it demolished the illegal buildings also to protect the properties of the presidency. The chairman of the municipality had said nothing would daunt them from doing their tasks to put an end to all violations and excessiveness without any kind of delay. This remains to be a point of view. However, the construction of 35 buildings, the...

How can a girl find a husband?
Al-Jazirah newspaper DURING wedding parties for women, you will find university graduates and beautiful girls nervously waiting for the mothers and sisters of young men to look at them with a focused stare so that they may tell their boys about them. They will expect the looks of the mothers and sisters to end in their engagement and finally marriage. Our homes are replete with young and beautiful girls waiting to be married but for some of them, the marriage takes a long time to come during which they may wither out or lose their good looks. We are a society at the bottleneck whether we like it or not. We bring our children up armed with good manners and spend lavishly on their education until our daughters reach the age of marriage when we start worrying. We do not usually find the ladder...

The commerce ministry raids
Al-Riyadh newspaperCORRUPTION is considered the worst enemy for the future of the people and the country; it is a dangerous virus that shakes the very foundations of the nation. Hence, our government has accorded top priority to combat corruption in all its forms and manifestations. Confronting corruption is as important as fighting an invading enemy. Fighting corruption is the first stage in laying the foundation for real development and progress. We are at a critical stage of transparency and accountability. The Ministry of Commerce and Investment began fighting commercial fraud by raiding the locations of greedy businessmen and makers of fake products. The raids are being carried out in cooperation with security authorities and they targeted mainly locations where fake food products and...

Traffic fines on the dead
Al-Madina newspaperTHE main reason behind the establishment of e-systems is to reduce time, save efforts and to ensure that the best accurate service is provided in quick time. There are many e-systems in which people are dealing with directly without having to visit any government branch, such as paying off public utility bills and traffic violations.Recently, Al-Madina daily published an interesting report that dealt with traffic violations and reviewed strange complaints against automatic violation system and violations issued by traffic officials. The report included some strange stories, some of which are shocking, and viewed some of the complaints filed against traffic violations issued to people with no cars, people who were sleeping at home and in some cases dead people. The report...

Do Saudi men know the meaning of verbal violence?
Al-Watan newspaperONCE during the elections to the Saudi Club in Reading University in the UK, a Saudi girl was making a point. A Saudi man, who was by the way a PhD student, stood up suddenly and shouted: "Silence the woman."All Saudi female students turned to look at him but all of kept quiet conforming to our custom. We were brought up in our society in a manner where we will never contest or challenge men.We continued our discussions but did not dare to take any legal action against the man though it was our right.Later, when I talked about the incident to a woman law teacher, she told me that I should have documented the incident because his rash outburst would have cost him his education in Reading, which places empowerment of women on top of its priorities. She said the...

A husband for my daughter
Al-Riyadh newspaperAFTER the Friday prayer in the mosque in our neighborhood, an old man stood up and told the congregates: "I have five daughters of marriageable age. If you know anyone who is religious and good mannered, kindly visit me at my home. If you do not know my place, you can ask the imam of the mosque and he will guide you."Though the man's request was unusual and daring to the point of impudence, people who gathered in the mosque praised him for his courage and openness.Hardly a year had passed than all his five daughters were married off.The man was not only brave but was wise as well. By so doing he did not only save his daughters from spinsterhood, but was able to secure for them the best of suitors. In our conservative society, a girl does not have much...

Should we eliminate the names of tribes from national ID cards?
OkazIt is springtime and so it is usual for some members of the Shoura Council to come up with some strange ideas. Some newspapers recently published a suggestion by a Shoura member who called for the removal of tribal names from Saudi ID cards. We would like to improve on this suggestion and draw attention to the fact that the tribe’s name is preceded by a clan’s name, which makes it easy to identify family trees. This, therefore, must also be deleted. Then there remain the names of fathers and grandfathers, which may be a way of guessing the tribe or family of a person. As a result, I suggest deleting citizens’ names and replacing them with numbers. For example, my name could be 812690, my neighbor could be 798543 and the name of a colleague in the office could be 470217.This would...
