Losing identity
Raghad A. Al-AmriTHE Austrian-born philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein once said, “The limits of my language are the limits of my world.” It is not the eradication of a mother tongue that will make you see the world, because how would you see the world if the world cannot see who you really are?Respecting your mother language means that you respect yourself, traditions, country and your people. By forgetting your mother tongue you intend to forget yourself and all of the above. In fact, learning another language is a great thing, but trust me it will never give you an identity.A person is always stuck between two things: the language he or she speaks and his or her real nationality. A person might, for example, speak English but at the same time one will be proud of his or her mother...

Losing identity

Words are sharp and often leave scars
Working for yourself requires love and respect in order to be your own supporter and self-motivator to have the ability to function in society and live for what you love. However, verbal abuse could wreck your confidence and the self-esteem that you need to achieve your goals.Verbal abuse is a common problem in society. It has the same effect as physical abuse but it cannot be recognized because its effects are invisible. Many of us can suffer from this unknowingly. It might lead to low self-esteem, depression and anxiety.Verbal abuse is the aggressive use of words aimed at an individual to control them or to make them feel powerless. This abuse can include words, such as “stupid,” “worthless” or “useless.” The abuse can have a long-term effect. It could destroy the mental,...

iPads can cause autism
It is not unusual to hear about autistic children in families. According to a family doctor, the number of autistic children is increasing every year and what is worse is that parents are responsible for this increase. In recent years, parents have been buying iPads or other tablets for their children to keep them quiet and relaxed. Unfortunately, this is causing autistic-like behavior in some children although it might not be at a severe level. Tablets consume the attention of children and disconnect them from their surroundings in such a way that they stop communicating with people, discovering new things and playing with other children. You can recognize an autistic child through obvious symptoms, such as the inability to communicate and speak their mind, the inability to make eye...

Don’t endanger our children’s future for the myth of excellence
School board exams are approaching and teachers, and more importantly parents, are under extreme pressure to ensure that their children get good grades.Every year we read news about the depression of students after exam results of 10th and 12th grades are announced or even before. As a trainer, when interacting with students, I ask: “What is the biggest fear of your life?” The most common answer is: “Fear of parents and how they respond to our grades. Can we ever meet their expectations?”I once counseled a parent who was under extreme stress because his child was eating, sleeping and playing well along with undertaking his studies during exam time. The parent’s complaint was that he could not see the stress and fear of the exam on his child’s face!He said: “My child is not...

You are either with us or against us
In our society, labeling people is very common, especially when it comes to critiquing ideas and opinions. Our society needs to understand that labeling people is useless. We need to change the way we think and learn to mind our own business. We have been raised and taught to fear foreign ideas. Society itself rejects anything foreign since we are not used to it. This is because we are attached to our customs and traditions. My father studied abroad for eight years and when he came back he shared his ideas about women driving. He was of the view that the government should establish schools to teach women how to drive. His family did not accept his way of thinking. They told him that he was very liberal and that our religion does not allow it. However, religion has nothing to do with women...

When life knocks you down
Life is a total reflection of our own perception. It is easy to have a great attitude, a strong work ethic and a positive outlook when things are going great; but how do we stand up during the tough times?Dante wrote The Divine Comedy while under a sentence of death, and Walt Disney went bankrupt and suffered a nervous breakdown. However, they still made it to the top of the mountain and are both examples of how we can wade through hurdles. Most people do not accept tough things and adversities easily. However, it is better not to fight and struggle. What is the use of doing so? Instead, we should be cool with what is and accept things as they are. We must push through the adversity we face in a cool way. If we try to fight with hardships, it only adds more pain and it may lead us to...

Saudi women can finally breathe in society
I remember when I graduated from university three years ago. Almost everything was impossible for me as a female graduate dreaming to step into the labor market to pursue my dreams and be independent. That was because all jobs, except for teaching, were considered socially taboo. Women were stigmatized for all of their choices. Even breathing, if I may say so, was considered a shame at the time. These illogical social norms and the misunderstood definitions of the role of men in the family unit have been passed on from one generation to the other. However, since the beginning of 2017, everything has dramatically changed in favor of women due to a very determined and young leader, Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Salman, who came to power to empower women.Women used to waste all of their energy in...

Saudi women can finally breathe in society

Potential risk of UK social unrest on Saudi investment
Further to my article that appeared in Saudi Gazette on Friday, December 29, 2017, I am reiterating my concern over Saudi investors’ safety in the UK, physically and fiscally. In that article, focusing on Islamophobia, I alluded to the misleading inaccuracy of the statement given by H.E. The Lord Mayor of London, Mr. Charles Bowman, on the attitude of British society towards cultural and ethnic diversity in the UK. The documented figures I presented leave no doubt that the atmosphere is charged with hostility and hatred towards the Islamic faith and its followers in particular – something that sharply contradicts with the depiction he put in absolute terms of the British society, as being “extremely forbearing, indulgent, tolerant, etc.”Having elaborately set out the physical harm...

Waiting for June 2018
After the monumental decision to allow women to drive, my debates with many non-Saudi peers have become a lot easier. For years, I have reminded everyone that there was not a law that forbade women to drive, even though women where not able to obtain a driving license in the Kingdom. From my prospective and from that of many within the decision-making chain in Saudi Arabia, it was a matter of satisfying the culture and society of the Kingdom, which has nothing to do with judiciary law.As for me personally I was never against women obtaining a driving license but did not know how society would view it, even though, ironically enough, small villages nested on the outskirts of the Kingdom’s vibrant cities have had women driving for decades without any problems. Of course, these women lived...

Queen Padmavati and the talking parrot
Parrots are such beautiful birds with alluring green feathers and red beaks devouring guavas and chillies. In Brazil, I traveled to the Pantanal, a bird sanctuary in Mato Grosso do Sul state, and the Amazon forests where I saw parrots the size of ducks with plumage of bright red, orange, yellow and blue. They were a sheer delight to watch. They were never frightened and walked right up to you to be fed. However, I never encountered any talking parrots in Brazil. Folklore has it that parrots in India can be trained to talk. In the 1980s, when I lived in a large villa in Jor Bagh, Delhi, I kept a pet parrot. It is said that parrots can be trained to talk in pitch dark. For many nights, I tried to teach my pet parrot to say “Hello”, but I failed miserably. Either he was a poor student, or...
