Stop poisoning cats and dogs!
A video recently went viral on social media that showed the inhumanity of Jeddah Municipality when it comes to street cats. The video seems to have been recorded by a member of the public who was shocked to see what was happening. The video shows how the municipality imprisons cats in cages that are so small that the cats are barely able to stand. What is even worse is that, according to an online campaign against animal cruelty, these cats are then killed in cold blood! This, unfortunately, seems to have been going on for years but has any attempt been made to stop it?It was reported in the past that the municipality was poisoning stray dogs as a way of decreasing their numbers. Do these dogs not have souls and emotions like us? Do they not deserve to live on this earth as well? Why are we...

Don’t judge students by their grades
Most students hate the fact that teachers in schools or lecturers in universities judge students according to their grades. And it is not just teachers, as even parents judge their children and compare them to other students who score A’s.If students get high grades, then they’re considered teachers’ favorites. Those who score badly are treated badly. Some teachers try to help students who score low grades, while others judge such students and believe they are incapable of doing any better. There is no such thing as an excellent student or a poor student. Teachers should understand that students are motivated at different levels, have different attitudes to learning, and respond differently to specific classroom environments and teaching. The more teachers understand these differences...

Punish the Taif nurses!
I am appalled at some of the comments circulating on social media regarding the recent video showing three nurses in Taif abusing their entrusted task as caregivers to a newborn infant.Although we have yet to see the judiciary system take action regarding this incident, I believe that those in the medical sector who have provided commentary about this incident are completely wrong. The video, which shows nurses in a maternity hospital in Taif mistreating a newborn by playing with his head, has led to them being fired and having their professional licenses revoked. Is this enough at this point until the judiciary process takes its course? In my opinion, it is not. The nurses should be held in custody while the authorities conduct an investigation of this matter. It sends a very lenient...

Google yourself
Five years ago, I was very excited about public speaking. So, I spent a great deal of time reading about and researching my new favorite subject. Online search was my favorite tool. Accordingly, I have googled many aspects of public speaking. For example, speech writing, body language, gestures and posture. However, one important thing was missing: practice.I believe one of the main reasons that I was a passive learner was that I regarded my previous knowledge and experience as less important. Introspection and reflection were missing. Thus, practice at the beginning seemed less relevant. Without realizing it, I had fallen into the trap of passive learning for months without any real progress.I believe that many people around the world do the same. When they want to learn something, they...

Islamophobia in the UK?
Our country, Saudi Arabia, was honored by the visit of the Lord Mayor of London, Mr. Charles Bowman, who spent a couple of days, during the second week of December, conducting business activities in the Gulf region.Ahead of the visit, Mr. Bowman arranged for a text written in eloquent Arabic to appear in The Riyadh daily newspaper on Monday, December 11th, under the title “Effective Friendship and Sustainable Partnership”, depicting a blueprint for his trip and its objectives.Al RiyadhThe professional aspects of the text are likely to be indisputably welcomed by economists and decision-makers in both countries. However, Mr. Bowman’s statement on social aspects merits a great deal of scrutiny. He said: “The British society is multi-cultural, and متسامح للغاية.” I...

Why I want to live in a village
It is the norm for people to migrate from towns and villages to large cities in search for better job opportunities and higher standards of living. Big cities have major attractions such as malls, parks and good restaurants; they also have better schools and housing. However, I decided to go against the norm and migrate to a small village. This is a decision that many of my friends and relatives found strange and which they spoke out about. However, to my surprise, it was the best decision I ever made.I am sure that my experience of living in a small village is similar to that of someone who lives in a small community away from a large metropolis anywhere in the world. Due to my experience of living in major cities and traveling the globe, I came to the conclusion that life is not very...

Do not marry someone to please someone else
While many Saudi students are preparing for the journey of their lives to travel overseas to attend a foreign university, a large number of them associate going abroad with marriage! It is seems to be a cliché nowadays to hear that a mother is investigating every possible option in search of an “express” wife for her ambitious son. It is true that mothers also try to find husbands for their daughters prior to their trip abroad as well, but I will deal with that in a future article.A friend of mine struggled a lot because of his mother’s constant demand for him to pick a girl from the long list she had compiled prior to his trip to the US. He tried hard to explain his position and thoughts about marriage at that important stage in his life. Eventually, his parents gave up after...

Punish those who vandalize public property
The recent vandalism on Jeddah’s new Corniche is pitiful and something of which we as a society should be ashamed. This does not befit the traditions and culture of a civilized people.I have great love for my city, greater than anything, which is what makes me ask: Why do we misuse public property? It is the property of the country, not of individuals, so why do some people think that they have the right to misuse it?The state has exerted its utmost effort and has spent billions on the project to make a beautiful seafront for the city of Jeddah, and it has succeeded in creating a sophisticated and a world-class venue for the public to enjoy.A radio commentator spoke harshly about the recent vandalism that has taken place on the newly opened section of the Corniche and it made me sad but...

Freedom of expression and the media: A strange paradox
In a landmark judgment of 1964, which still holds good, the Supreme Court of the United States emphatically established the right of the press to criticize public officials without being subject to libel or defamation charges. While reversing the Alabama State Supreme Court judgment in the case of the New York Times Co. Vs. L.B. Sullivan, the US Supreme Court Judge, Justice William J. Brennan Jr., in his majority opinion placed the legal issues in the context of what he referred to “a profound national commitment to the principle that debate on public issues should be uninhibited, robust and wide-open; and that it may well include vehement, caustic and sometimes unpleasantly sharp attacks on government and public officials.”Justice Brennan maintained that erroneous statements were...

Revenge with success
The best way to take revenge on negative and pessimistic people is by being successful. It is as the American singer Frank Sinatra once said: “The best revenge is massive success.” So when we get hurt or are insulted by anyone, such as strangers or even those close to us, we should not give up on anything, including what we believe, our dreams and ambitions, and turn into pessimists. Why do many people become pessimists? Why does sadness and frustration bring out the worst in a person? I believe the circumstances that pessimists find themselves in have not been easy. These circumstances force them to believe everything in their life is hideous. However, this is not an excuse for being negative. Many people have been through tough situations and have faced many struggles in their lives....
