JEDDAH — Saudi forces killed a suspected terrorist who attempted to sneak into a security facility in the Eastern Province city of Abqaiq early Friday, the Saudi Press Agency reported.
Interior Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Mansour Al-Turki said the officers intercepted the man, identified as Nawaf Al-Otaibi, at around 2 a.m. Friday.
The man resisted arrest and took cover behind a building under construction, Al-Turki said. He said the man then opened fire on the security men, killing one officer and injuring two others. In the ensuing exchange of fire, Al-Otaibi was killed.
The officer martyred in the attack was identified as Sergeant Ali Al-Habeeb. Two other officers who sustained injuries were taken to hospital.
A machine gun and live ammunition were found with the suspect, Al-Turki said, adding that an investigation is under way.
In 2006, four Al-Qaeda militants breached the gates of Saudi Aramco's Abqaiq plant but did not manage to cause significant damage before being killed in a shootout with security guards.
