ResizeVALENCIA — Aljaz Bedene of Britain won 12 of the last 15 games Tuesday to beat eighth-seeded Jeremy Chardy of France 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 in the first round of the Valencia Open.
The Slovenia-born Briton, who had 14 aces, will next face Vasek Pospisil of Canada.
Bedene won their only previous meeting at the 2014 Sony Ericsson Open. "He serves big so I need to be ready for his big serves," Bedene said. "Not just to put in a return but to make something of it. He's a great volleyer as well and has a great forehand, so I need to be active all the time and not lose serve as I did so easily in the first set today."
In other games: Benoit Paire of France beat Norbert Gombos of Slovakia 3-6, 6-3, 6-4; Mischa Zverev of Germany downed Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil 7-6(4), 6-7(2), 7-6(5); Taro Daniel of Japan edged Michal Przysiezny of Poland 4-6, 7-6(2), 6-3; Joao Sousa of Portugal beat Gilles Muller of Luxembourg 7-6(9), 6-3.
Nadal struggles
In Switzerland, Rafael Nadal rallied from losing positions twice to beat Lukas Rosol of the Czech Republic 1-6, 7-5, 7-6 (4) in the Swiss Indoors first round Monday.
The 69th-ranked Rosol, who beat Nadal at Wimbledon in 2012, served for the match leading 5-4 in the second set but lost seven straight games.
Nadal then trailed 3-0 in the decisive tiebreaker before clinching a victory he celebrated with vigorous fist pumps.
"For me it was very difficult to adjust," said the seventh-seeded Spaniard, who played his first indoor match this season. "I tried to survive in that second set and wait for an opportunity."
Earlier, French qualifier Adrian Mannarino, beat Viktor Troicki of Serbia, 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (3), and Austria's Dominic Thiem beat Dutchman Robin Haase 0-6, 7-6 (5), 7-5.
In the late match, Donald Young of the United States beat wild-card entry Henri Laaksonen of Switzerland 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.
