Some ask: Why do they hate Saudi Arabia?
Why this lying in wait and focusing on everything Saudi? Why are they trying to belittle the Kingdom’s achievements? Why are they trying to demonize Saudi Arabia? Why, why and why? This despite the Kingdom promoting good throughout its history and at present, being a source of inspiration for providing humanitarian support and aid to the poor countries and communities. It is also a source of support for development efforts and establishing peace, providing hundreds of billions of dollars for social and economic development from which needy peoples have benefited, and the Kingdom siding with and supporting just causes, among others.Despite the Kingdom’s clear, positive effects on the international community, especially the poor countries, there are people who are lying in wait for the...

The challenges and opportunities facing the Saudi education system in coronavirus period
The COVID-19 pandemic has reached Saudi Arabia and the number of people infected by this virus in the Kingdom is on a steady rise. The prevalence of novel coronavirus disease keeps growing around the world. The truth is: This pandemic has changed our lives in more ways than one.The COVID-19 brought many challenges not only to the healthcare industry but to other aspects of life, including education. Children and students of all ages don’t go to schools and universities anymore, they don’t socialize in a standard way, and their routine has changed practicallyovernight, and the system has to adapt.Saudi Arabia has introduced important measures to prevent COVID-19 from spreading uncontrollably at the right time. At the very beginning of March, the Saudi Arabian government decided to close...

An earful from America
I CONSIDER myself fortunate to be living in Saudi Arabia at the time of this global pandemic called the Coronavirus or Covid-19. I feel safe with the steps my government has taken to protect all the Kingdom’s residents; steps taken very early on that undoubtedly have helped stave off a mass epidemic. However, such is not the case elsewhere. In the United States of America of all countries, one would have expected a far more professional response than a young country such as ours. But it does not appear so. At least in the eyes of someone who after several long years as a resident of the Kingdom had moved back to her native country. She writes: “You know I still haven't adjusted to being back here. Maybe — I say hopefully —it is just being here in Florida, but I feel such a fish...

To protect the society, let’s build confidence and unify ranks
The proliferation of the COVID-19 virus posed a serious threat to world public health due to its rapid spread over a wide area and the great difficulty in imposing precautionary measures to curb the spread of the epidemic.Following the outbreak of the epidemic in the Chinese city of Wuhan, early last year, China took firm, decisive, comprehensive, full-fledged highest-level precautionary measures including quarantines to curb the spread of the epidemic. These efforts were exerted under the leadership of Chinese President Xi Jinping and his direct supervision. The successful Chinese experience has proved that the epidemic can be controlled, but it requires strenuous efforts and great sacrifices by the government and all the people.Following are the major lessons from the Chinese method of...

Yes, I want to be the second wife!!!
Tariq A. Al-Maeena A FEW weeks ago, a column I wrote titled “Should I take another wife” drew a very moving reply which I am submitting below. It offers another perspective into the multi-wives quandary facing some members of society. The writer says: “Mr. Al-Maeena’s writing has prompted me to reply. I would have totally agreed with him about 30 years ago when I was twenty. The idea of marrying a married man and having to be part of an extended family of co-wives and children would have been a shocking ultimatum for me. Having been brought up in the UK and not having the practical knowledge about polygamy, it would have been a definite no. But age has mellowed me and has shown me the benefits of plural marriages.“I have three unmarried young adult children whom I love dearly....

Coronavirus and savings
Novel Coronavirus has stunned our planet as do science fiction movies. The stories that we used to hear and read about in history have now become a practical scenario. We see how a virus, which is not visible to the naked eye, can make scientists spend sleepless nights and tend to eliminate our economic gains, in a blink of an eye. I see there seems to be an agreement between the virus and technology as if viruses are ruling our planet!Technology now tightens its grip on the arteries of the world, by running its affairs at times while enslaving it at other times and will soon kill it. But now, in the backdrop of coronavirus fears, we see the collapse of stock markets and the decline and instability of the international markets. Even individuals are affected. The businesses of people who are...

Best reward!
Various religions, systems and laws are urged to donate and do well in all its forms. In the business world, there are big businessmen who compete in the field of charitable work just as they do in the financial and business arenas. There is Larry Ellison, who founded the technology company Oracle, which uses his donations in the fields of education and health care, and there is Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook site, who too donates part of his wealth to boost education and medical research. He even built a great hospital in San Francisco named after him. There is Sergey Brin, one of the founders of Google, who directed most of his contributions to Parkinson's treatment research, and of course there is the wonderful Bill Gates, who donated half of his $90 billion wealth to fund...

Islam ... tolerance and political Islam
Dr. Khaled M. BatarfiI was sitting next to my favorite classmate and friend, Jack, in Journalism School, University of Oregon. He was commenting on a subject matter, when he suddenly announced: Me, as a Jew and a communist, think ....”I couldn’t follow what he said next, as my mind was spinning then at his shocking revelation. Now, here is the man who helped me publish my thesis about US media bias toward Israel and against the Arabs. The same person who led my classmates to convince our professor to change the class schedule in order to suit my Ramadan fasting hours. What’s happening, here? How is this revealed “identity” going to affect our relations? Then, I thought about it in a different way: What difference does it make?He is still the same kind, helpful, friendly person I...

Islam ... tolerance and political Islam

‘Should I take another wife?’
THIS question was posed to me recently by a long-time acquaintance. A married man with four children, and settling down in the middle passages of his life, he was considering his candidacy for a multiple partner lifestyle.“Why would you want to do such a thing?” I asked. “It is Islamic, and there are more than enough unwed women of marriageable age, and therefore I feel it is the right thing to do. To provide them with a home and a respectable status,” was his matter of fact reply.“Is that all?” I replied, wondering if carnal desires had not crossed his mind whilst his mind was debating the issue. Perhaps he was using me as a sounding board to validate his intentions, and his mind was made up, but I had some thoughts of my own.“Listen to me carefully. If it is because of...

‘Should I take another wife?’

Facing the Iranian corona!
It was heart-breaking to watch the Holy Haram in Makkah empty, on the 24hrs Qur'an channel. I felt the same visiting the Prophet Mosque in Al-Madinah just a day after the closure of the tomb area, and the old part of the haram.Still, my wife, mother-in-law and me, were very assured as we witnessed first-hand the strict and extensive systems put in place in both holy cities. We felt safer as we went through checkpoints and areas being sanitized by professional cleaners, and followed meticulous procedures that govern every action, including drinking Zamzam water and touching holy shrines. In my college, too, we faithfully apply all health recommendations, to the letter. Our students are given detailed advices on how to keep themselves and their families safe.Travel, events, and movement...
